“What Are You Listening To?”: A Look at How Music Taste Changes with Age

Music enthusiasts know that music is as personal as a fingerprint. I asked my followers to share their favorite music genres, and the responses painted a fascinating portrait of how taste evolves across generations. From chart-topping hits to underground anthems, here’s how our audience’s preferences stack up by age.

Ages 10–20: Pop Hearts, Indie Souls

Listeners in their teens leaned into the sounds shaping the current moment.
Top genres:

  • Pop and Alternative tied for first at 30% each,
  • With Rock, Folk, Metal, and Country each taking 10%.

Ages 20–30: Variety

For those in their twenties, music taste branches wider and more exploratory.
Top genres:

  • Alternative led with 21.7%,
  • Metal followed at 17.4%, and Rock came in at 13%.

The rest of the spread shows a variety of styles- K-Pop, Punk, and Bluegrass each held 8.7%, while Grindcore, Rap, Jazz, and Reggaeton carved out their own corners. They say your 20’s are for exploring, after all.

Ages 30+: Electronic Exploration

EDM claimed the top spot with 35.7%, showing a surprising passion for electronic beats and festival energy. Trailing behind were Pop and Bluegrass (both 14.3%), with Hip-Hop, Jazz, Metal, Classical, and even a niche mention of Frutiger Aero (each 7.1%) rounding out our genre map.

What the Data Says About Us

Across all ages, Alternative emerged as a unifying thread. Meanwhile, EDM’s rise in older groups and Pop’s steady presence among younger ones show how music remains both a time capsule and a tool for reinvention.

What’s clear: today’s listeners are genre-fluid, exploring new niches as the seasons change.
